Enhancing Institutional Communication on Migration through a More Effective and Humane Approach
Enhancing Institutional Communication on Migration through a More Effective and Human-Centred Approach was the focus of a workshop held in Neum from 12 to 14 May 2026.
The workshop was organized as the concluding activity of a campaign aimed at improving institutional communication on migration, responding to the need expressed by representatives of the Ministry of Security of Bosnia and Herzegovina for a comprehensive approach to strengthening knowledge and skills in public communication on migration-related issues. Building on previous practical trainings on the use of digital tools and communication techniques, as well as the implementation of a media campaign on migration, asylum, and return, the workshop focused on consolidating acquired knowledge and further enhancing the individual competencies of participants.
Particular emphasis was placed on developing a critical approach to reporting, applying the recommendations and guidelines developed through the campaign, and strengthening cooperation between institutions and the academic community.
During the workshop, participants examined communication practices and media reporting on migration in Bosnia and Herzegovina, with a special focus on crisis communication, information coordination, and examples of good practices and communication challenges. Discussions also covered leadership within the security sector, internal and inter-institutional communication, and strategies for strengthening public trust.
Special attention was given to contemporary communication trends, including the use of artificial intelligence-based tools and their application in the day-to-day work of communication services and public information officers.
The workshop also provided a platform for discussing ways to enhance cooperation between institutions and academia, as well as the development of future educational programmes and professional training activities tailored to the actual needs of the security sector.
The event was held within the framework of the project “Strengthening Migration Management, Asylum and Return Processes in the Western Balkans”, implemented by Hilfswerk International in partnership with the Joint Coordination Platform (JCP). The project is funded by the Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund (AMIF) and the Federal Ministry of the Interior of the Republic of Austria.
