Workshop: Media narratives' role in shaping public perception of migrants traversing the Western Balkans

From 18th to 20th November 2024, a workshop entitled “Media Narratives' Role in Shaping Public Perception of Migrants Traversing the Western Balkans” was held in Tarčin. This important initiative was organized by Hilfswerk International (HWI) within the framework of the project “Strengthening Migration, Asylum and Return Management in the Western Balkans”, funded by the Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund (AMIF) and the Federal Ministry of the Interior of the Republic of Austria.

The workshop brought together key stakeholders in the field of migration management in Bosnia and Herzegovina, journalists, representatives of non-governmental organizations and human rights experts. The aim of the workshop was to raise awareness of the media narrative about people on the move through the Western Balkans, during which the differences between security and humanitarian terminology in reporting on migration were discussed. Through interactive sessions, participants addressed topics such as: exploring ways to present migrants in a positive light, understanding the migration journey from the perspective of those on the move, examining different cultural approaches to mixed migration, analyzing global media coverage of migration and identifying potential biases, and discussing appropriate and sensitive language in reporting on migration.

A unique aspect of the workshop was the integration of art and interactive activities, through an exhibition of paintings created by people on the move from different countries of origin, presented by the BHWI Foundation. In addition, a game called "Cobweb" simulated the challenges that people on the move face in reporting violence, fostering empathy and understanding.

One of the most thought-provoking discussions focused on the use of the term "GAME" among people on the move to describe migration flows through the Western Balkans. Research has shown that the term “GAME” has taken hold because it most closely reflects the experience of people on the move along the Balkan Route, drawing parallels with the popular Netflix series “Squid Game”, in which participants facing financial problems participate in a series of children's games with deadly consequences for all who fail to complete the game. Workshop participants emphasized that this is precisely what shows us the role and impact of the migration route on people on the move and on their lives and that it is necessary to provide these people with greater support and compassion.

The importance of joint efforts by the media, civil society and government institutions to promote a more humane and informed public discourse on migration was emphasized. Participants expressed interest in future cooperation and the potential for creating a more empathetic public discourse on migration. Breaking harmful stereotypes and promoting accurate narratives focused on human well-being will contribute to a more just society for all.

Hilfswerk International and its partners are optimistic that this workshop will contribute to a significant change in media narratives and public perception, fostering a more welcoming and inclusive environment for migrants in the Western Balkans.
